Framework is a supporting structure around which a program or an application can be build. To develop popular applications like on demand delivery, there are many full-stack PHP frameworks that can be used without much performance lag and stability problems. There were two PHP frameworks in which developers took interest and now they are most widely used PHP frameworks, namely Laravel and Yii. Recent releases of these frameworks are Laravel 5.4 and Yii2. These frameworks got lot of followers across globe and they play very important role in development of PHP applications.

Both Laravel and Yii are designed in MVC architecture with multiple numbers of extensions. Both of these frameworks need PHP 5.4 or higher versions for proper functioning. Both these frameworks work with an ORM having DAO, Active record pattern, and Doctrine 2 via plugins. Our team has researched the functioning of both frameworks from developer’s point of view. Let’s see what we got.

Overview of Laravel

Laravel framework was specially designed to support web applications with decorous and elegant syntax. It is easily accessible and robust. Laravel holds strong hands in routing, caching and authentication. Laravel framework was designed to support all high-end PHP as well as other frameworks like Sinatra, Asp.net MVC and Ruby on rails. The framework is embedded with migration system, Inversion of control and module testing.

Overview of Yii

Yii is an ideal framework for fast development and advanced web applications. It is used by developers to build RESRful API, web applications, portals and much more. Yii has an exquisite Query builder and diverse caching that makes it more desirable. Yii as a framework has been proved very effective in terms of Scalability, speed and in development of customized extensions.

Extensions

Both Laravel and Yii are offering valuable and top-notch extensions. Extensions offered by these frameworks are very useful for beginners as well as experts. These extensions cover development support from simple web page to complex applications.

Migration

Both of these frameworks provide excellent tools for migration. Seeders can be included in Laravel framework, to do migration in much faster and easy way. These migration tools enable professionals to achieve excellent data testing. For these purposes, we find Laravel slightly more advanced than Yii.

Security

Laravel’s security tools are not as much effective as Yii. Yii web development provides more security that Laravel web development. But both these platforms provide developers with Sql injections CSRF and excellent authentication features as well.

Form validation

If we talk about Form validation, then Laravel is way ahead in this aspect. Both these platforms have their own way of form validation. Laravel contains a form validator which stays as a different supporting class. Programmers can validate the data in Laravel irrespective of time and place. Programmers can also extend it according to their own methods. But in Yii the form validation method is different. In Yii developers can set their rules and check form validation on the basis of rules. Here programmers have to develop specific classes or utilize validation script to achieve the task.

Debugging

Laravel PHP framework provides multiple debugging options like logging, lmho which is limited but yet can solve issues with the help of extensions. While Yii framework comes with the comprehensive debugging console, database requests logging and multi-level logging options for debugging.

SO these two frameworks have lots of similarities, but the differences are what make developers to take sides. At some parts, Yii beats Laravel while at some parts Laravel steals the show. Although Yii has a detailed documentation but Laravel lacks a detailed documentation. So in case of Yii, Programmers don’t have to depend on source codes. So both these frameworks have own merits and de-merits. But this is also true that, both of them are best PHP framework present in the industry. So it is very difficult to choose the winner framework between them.
